A bad edit is easy to undo. A command that deleted an external object is not. When Mira tests rewind, she discovers that chat history, local files, processes, Git state, and remote services do not all travel backward together.

The question: What state does the agent actually own, and which state lies outside its reach?

Start from first principles

The workspace is the agent's operating system in miniature. It provides files, processes, environment, repository state, and recovery points—but it cannot magically reverse the rest of the world.

Many coding-agent failures are environmental: wrong cwd, stale checkout, missing dependency, concurrent edit, lingering process, or a mutation the transcript cannot reconstruct.

Build the smallest useful mental model

Limits and uncertainty

Rollback scope. File rewind cannot generally reverse APIs, deployments, messages, databases, or disclosed secrets.
Concurrent writers. Other processes can change files during a prompt and complicate attribution.
Environment drift. Resume preserves session state, not an immutable dependency ecosystem unless the operator supplies one.

The public repository is unusually detailed, but it is not the complete deployed product. The snapshot has one visible public commit, so it cannot support a rich historical explanation of why every boundary evolved. Hosted xAI model serving, account systems, and production topology remain outside this study. Where code and guide differ, this series gives the pinned implementation priority and marks documentation-only behavior instead of silently merging versions.

FAQ

Why not just use Git reset?

Git handles repository state; session rewind also aligns tracked files with conversation. Never erase unrelated user work.

Does proxy mode mean cloud execution?

It means calls cross a workspace service boundary. The public tree does not justify assumptions about every deployment topology.

Is a worktree a sandbox?
